Planned Downtime: June 17th

Published June 16, 2026 1 month ago Updated 4 weeks ago

We got the green-light that the rack for our Wayfarer server is ready tomorrow (June 17, 2026). This means we can transport the server to the new location and hopefully combat the lag and latency issues.

Now while we don't HAVE to move it ASAP, ideally we do so we can finally get past the lag issues. Moving the server moves it to a faster internet location that -hopefully- should resolve a lot of the issues we've been experiencing since we exploded in growth.

This means that we'll be moving to a shorter shift in the interest of better server performance. This means the shift would end around June 17, 2026 8:00 PM (UTC -5). Downtime would be anywhere between 1 and 3 hours as we move the server.

Server Move FAQ

Why is it moving?

We physically own our server blade in the interest of more affordable ongoing server hosting. Right now it resides in a rack that is on slower cable internet, which has been a big bottleneck. Our main server location is slated for a fiber internet upgrade, but theres no ETA on the order. So we're moving it nearby into a rack that has fiber until the home rack has fiber.

Fiber Internet?

Fiber connections generally experience less congestion and more stable response times, helping reduce spikes and jitter during gameplay. It's important to note that this move won't magically eliminate all latency for players who are thousands of miles away. Someone connecting from Australia, China, or Europe will still have to contend with distance. However, the goal is to provide a cleaner, more direct path to the server, resulting in a more consistent experience and fewer network-related issues for players both in North America and abroad.

Where is the server moving?

Physically, same region. Central United States.

Do I need to do anything different after this?

Nope! If you connect via the hub, no problem. If you connect via our domain (play.wayfarer14.com), still wont be any issue.

Will any data be lost?

Nope! You shouldn't notice any huge difference other than ideally things run better. We're moving everything together. Server binaries, Database, Website API calls, everything.

Are you moving auth servers during this too?

This move, no. The focus for this move is networking. Once this proves stable, we'll discuss auth server transition.

What if the server performance (lag) isn't better?

We're leaving moving to a cloud host on the table as a potential option. Its a last resort, but its not out of the question if that means best performance.
